St. Francis Hospital IMCU-CCU Expansion

Colorado Springs, Colorado

Due to the rapid growth of the Colorado Springs community, St. Francis Hospital expanded their facility to meet the needs of the rising population. In anticipation of this growth, the Tower Expansion – completed in 2019 and included the Emergency Department relocation and expansion, additional operating rooms, and renovated and expanded Level III NICU – was planned to allow two additional patient floors to be constructed above the fourth-floor interstitial mechanical floor. The careful planning for this future growth allowed the additional fifth and sixth floors to be constructed without disruption to patient care areas on the floors below.

Both floors were designed to provide 30 universal rooms: one for a critical care unit (CCU), and the other for an intermediate care unit (IMCU). The new addition's roof features a new helipad for Flight for Life transport. Trauma elevators and stairs were extended to the roof to provide egress access to the helipad, providing faster transport for life-saving care for critically injured patients.

RTA and the consultant team worked alongside the owner in a fully collaborative effort from pre-design through the end of construction. As with the Tower Expansion, an IPD delivery method with a multi-party agreement was utilized, with teams co-locating on site. Because of the high level of collaboration and teaming, the project came in under the original contract amount, even with COVID-related construction delays.
