Penrose Hospital Cancer Center

Penrose–St Francis has been named one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for seven consecutive years. In its dedication to serving the community, Penrose-St. Francis has been providing cancer care since 1939. The current building was originally constructed in 1991 with three linear accelerator vaults and full medical oncological services. Renovations were desired to accommodate the addition of the state-of-the-art Cyberknife system and expanded cancer care services.

The addition created administrative and research space, and increased the center’s treatment capacity by adding another linear accelerator vault. RTA also created a pedestrian bridge that connects the cancer center to the adjacent medical office building and, in turn, unified the entire cancer care experience.
The design team worked with administrative personnel, nurses, and physicists in order to evaluate the needs of patients and staff. RTA then formed a plan to efficiently meet those needs. The main goal of the Penrose Cancer Center addition was to increase the availability of the services provided, while creating a unified and cohesive facility.
