UCCS Development Office Remodel
As part of University Advancement, the Office of Development supports fundraising on behalf of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs. Its staff works with donors to fuel financial success for the university, but the existing space configuration limited employee growth, and the aesthetics did not reflect the energy or personality of the staff. In 2018, RTA was retained to renovate the space into an office that was open, full of natural light, and would meet the needs of the growing department.

- Collaborative design process
- Daylighting
- Flexible furnishings
- Varied work zones
Previously, the space was limited to roughly 14 employees. The renovated office can easily accommodate 26 employees, with the ability to add more with simple changes to the furnishings. Several walls were removed to allow natural light to flood the interior of the space, and the functionality of the suite was greatly improved by providing two huddle rooms for meetings and a private phone room. Different work zones with varying levels of privacy and improved ergonomics for staff with sit-to-stand desks and work stations have drastically increased the flexibility of the space. By reusing some ceiling tiles, doors, lights and furniture, the project stayed within the budget while providing the functionality and flexibility needed.
The design of the renovated Office of Development focused on connections: connections to place, connections to people, and a connection to the university. The inspiration for the design was born from a piece of fabric with vibrant colors and a strong geometric pattern. This fabric inspired the colorful accent walls, the strong patterned flooring in the break area, decorative acoustic tiles above the open work area, and decorative wallpaper behind the reception desk. The fabric was also used on mobile pedestals to tie the entire design together.
