The Southern Colorado Ronald McDonald House serves families of critically ill children in the communities of Southern Colorado. The need for a larger House reflects the growing pediatric and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) services in Colorado Springs including the new Children’s Hospital, the expanded birth center at the University of Colorado Health Memorial Hospital North, and the expanded NICU at the St. Francis Medical Center. Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southern Colorado purchased land just a block away from the new Children’s Hospital for their expanded facility to keep families as close as possible to their children in their time of healing.
RTA visited several Ronald McDonald House locations to speak to families, volunteers and staff about their needs and how the various facilities were functioning. RTA worked alongside the staff of Ronald McDonald House of Southern Colorado to ensure all the spaces within the new House are designed and developed with full consideration given to the growing number of families that are served.
The new Southern Colorado Ronald McDonald House will provide four times more space and doubles the guest room capacity. The House will be approximately 25,000 square feet and will include 20 family suites with the ability to expand to 30, a manager suite, two full kitchens and a dining room, a children’s play area, a teen room, a family room, numerous support spaces and ample space for guests.
Outdoor features include respite areas, walking paths, a children’s play area, a half-basketball court, and a patio with outdoor seating and a barbeque grill. With a groundbreaking in July 2018, the new Ronald McDonald house is slated for completion in the summer of 2019.
