Conejos County Hospital Emergency Department Renovation & Expansion

La Jara, CO

Why

Connecting through experience of place.

As part of the San Luis Valley Health organization, the Conejos County Hospital is the only emergency service provider in Conejos and Costilla counties providing for the emergency medical needs of more than 3,000 patients annually. After serving the area for more than fifty years, the Conejos County Hospital retained RTA to design a much needed Emergency Department renovation. The renovation and addition provides 5,300 SF of restructured space to deliver more efficient flow, improved patient experience, and life safety improvements.

How

Ever curious. Ever learning. Ever improving.

Because the facility was constructed in the 1950s with an addition in 1975, interior upgrades, as well as a more welcoming waiting area and controlled-access entry, were needed. Working closely with hospital administration, a specially-convened user group, and local authorities having jurisdiction, it was also determined that new mechanical and electrical systems upgrades were necessary to ensure the hospital is code compliant and more energy efficient.

What

Purposeful, engaging solutions.

Renovations to the Emergency Department include a new welcoming entry, life safety improvements, controlled access to the hospital, a welcoming waiting room, and full interior finish upgrades for the 1960s-era facility. The ED addition provides a trauma room, five exam rooms, a reconfigured nurse’s station, and a reconfigured ambulance entry.
