The Adaptive Sports Center (ASC), founded in 1987, was originally known as the Physically Challenged Ski Program of Crested Butte. During its first winter, 33 lessons were given from an all-volunteer staff. The Adaptive Sports Center is now a world-class program that operates year-round, with activities ranging from biking and skiing to ice climbing and kayaking.
After more than 30 years of helping individuals with varying abilities explore, enjoy, and conquer outdoor activities, the Adaptive Sports Center (ASC) outgrew their facilities and were in need of additional space to continue to expand their programs. In August of 2016, the ASC purchased the Outpost Building in the Crested Butte Mountain Range Base Area with the intention of replacing the existing structure with an approximate 25,000 SF state-of-the-art Kelsey Wright Building which will showcase its winter and summer on-mountain programs.
RTA was chosen in June 2017 to lead the design effort of the new Kelsey Wright Building. The new building will allow the staff and guests to more efficiently and effectively participate in their outdoor programs.
RTA worked closely with the ASC Design Advisory Team on the programming and space requirements for the new Kelsey Wright Building. The design process was comprised of review meetings and charrettes, including an intensive two day 3-P workshop. Multiple design options and associated costs were developed to align the goals and visions of ASC with the project's budget.
The new Kelsey Wright Building will effectively double the square footage of the original building and significantly increase the amount of guests the ASC will be able to host on site. It will provide additional storage for equipment, a participant assessment space, an equipment modification and fit-up area, gathering spaces, ski-in ski-out accessibility, an adaptive climbing wall, a kitchen and dining area, and lodging for guests and their families. Additionally, clients will be able to enjoy more social experiences and meaningful interaction with peers in similar situations.
The Kelsey Wright Building broke ground in the spring of 2018 and will officially open in the summer of 2019.
