Adaptive Sports Center's Kelsey Wright Building
"Our state-of-the-art equipment and our ability to customize experiences for participants has always been our leading edge. This new building brings our accommodations to the same level of excellence and will make each experience even more beneficial to the participant. It will be the best piece of equipment we have ever had.”
Chris Read, Program Director
Why
The Adaptive Sports Center (ASC), founded in 1987, was originally known as the Physically Challenged Ski Program of Crested Butte. During its first winter, 33 lessons were given from an all-volunteer staff. The Adaptive Sports Center is now a world-class program that operates year-round, with activities ranging from biking and skiing to ice climbing and kayaking.
After more than 30 years of helping individuals with disabilities explore, enjoy, and conquer outdoor activities, ASC outgrew their facilities and needed additional space to continue to expand their outdoor programs. In August of 2016, ASC purchased the Outpost Building in the Crested Butte Mountain Range Base Area with the intention of replacing the existing structure with a state-of-the-art Kelsey Wright Building.
How
Throughout the design process, the RTA team engaged with members of the ASC staff and board. The group of advisors provided valuable input into the programming and space requirements to ensure the new building aligned with ASC’s goals and visions. The design process included multiple review meetings and charrettes, including an intensive two-day 3-P event.
What
The new Kelsey Wright Building allows the staff and guests to more efficiently and effectively participate in the outdoor programs. Additional storage for equipment, a fit-up area, gathering spaces, ski-in ski-out accessibility, indoor rock climbing, a kitchen and dining area, and bedrooms to house guests and their families doubles the amount of guests the Adaptive Sports Center is able to host on site. The architectural concept of the building is Mountain Modern, exposed structural elements where appropriate, and exposed wood soffits below roof overhangs give warm and welcoming attributes to the building.
