Gunnison Community School

Originally built in 1996 and with significant upgrades completed in 2010, the Gunnison Community School continues to meet many of the first-grade through eighth-grade school needs. The enrollment at GCS is consistent from year to year with small growth that the school can accommodate within existing facilities into the near future. As with other schools in the district, changes in school health and security standards, and increased space needs to support current educational practices have led to recommendations for improvements. Additionally, with so many kids in the building (over 800), adequate capacity to accommodate school lunches continues to be a need.

Taking current knowledge and best practices in school security in mind, the district is moving toward improved security and access control in all school facilities across the district. At GCS the proposed solution includes moving the Administration to the exterior corner of the building to improve visibility to outside spaces and control of a single-entry point to the building. The addition of gender-neutral restroom facilities improve inclusiveness and student health is improved through the addition of handwashing stations at food service areas and throughout the building.

The library space will be renovated to meet the ever-changing needs for collaboration space within schools. Included within the Library area is a new middle school maker space to provide a resource for project-based learning and two flexible classrooms. The severe needs special education program is in need of access to daylight and views for students who spend the majority of their day inside an interior classroom. A new Achievement Center addition is planned to provide high-quality space for the special education program as well as the counselors in Student Services.

To address the need for more cafeteria capacity, this area will be expanded in size by moving the administration and will include provisions to utilize the student gallery through the use of glass overhead doors. Serving lines will be expanded to allow simultaneous lunch service. Classroom pods will take better advantage of the common space outside classrooms by constructing new break-out spaces that have a visual connection to the classrooms. And middle school Career Technical Education (CTE) programs will be improved by linking the technology classroom to the fabrication lab and by adding dedicated and secure outdoor space.

Exterior improvements include the construction of a second soccer field complex to serve as a venue for district-wide soccer games including bleachers, restrooms, and concessions. Upgrades to the existing playgrounds, improved trail connections, and improved site security through landscape fences to delineate public and student spaces are proposed. Sidewalks are included from the school to Denver Avenue to improve pedestrian safety and separate bicycle traffic.

And finally, the proposed school improvements include money to address ongoing maintenance and school energy improvements. Energy audits found this facility to be using significantly more energy than other buildings in the district. Recommended improvements include the addition of continuous exterior insulation, replacement of original windows, and conversion of the mechanical system to a variable airflow system. The proposed plan improves energy performance through the installation of a district-wide mechanical controls system. Other needed work includes replacement of worn floor coverings, replacement of the failing exterior stucco system with a new fenestration.
