After completion of Denver International Airport and the E470 beltway, School District 27J was experiencing unprecedented growth. RTA was commissioned in 2001 to program and design a 61,500-SF prototype school (named Thimmig K-8 School) that could be operated either as a K-5 or a K-8 school. We designed the prototype school to include specialty spaces such as large science classrooms and small group areas—essential to the middle school (6-8) programs. In 2002, plans were made to construct two new K-8 schools using RTA’s prototype. Construction was completed on Second Creek K-8 School and Mary E. Pennock K-8 School in July 2003.
RTA was then commissioned to utilize the previously developed K-8 prototype for two K-5 schools for School District 27J. West Ridge K-5 was complete in 2007 and Turnberry PK-5 was complete in 2008. The floor plan for Turnberry was expanded to accommodate two new preschools.
