"Our timeline for completion is aggressive, but with RTA on our team, I know that we will get it done on time and on budget...”

Rick O'Connell, Former President and CEO, Penrose-St. Francis Health Services

Saint Francis Medical Center sits on a forty-two acre site in Colorado Springs. RTA designed the medical center to enhance the lives and work of the patients, visitors, staff, and physicians through the creative application of Evidence-Based-Design (EBD) principles. Because healing starts with caregivers, we included elements that would assist nurses, doctors, and staff in fulfilling their healing missions.

As part of our research, the following EBD principles were utilized: private rooms with full bathrooms, patient-controlled lighting, television, and bed adjustments, as well as, external nurse observation areas to minimize disruptions. RTA also chose soothing colors to provide a home-like setting for healing patients.

Each private room was effectively zoned for patient, family, and staff in order to maximize comfort and efficiency. RTA also created decentralized nursing alcoves in order to allow for quick access to patients in emergencies and foster better communication among the staff. The team at RTA knows that connecting patients to the natural environment impacts healing and well-being. This is why they brought the outside prairie environment inside through colors and finishes in order to provide a calming, peaceful, and comforting atmosphere to patients and families experiencing life-changing events. In addition to colors and finishes, a prairie river and several reflecting pools at the associate entrance were added physical features that remind St. Francis visitors that they are moving into a healing environment.

RTA, GE Johnson, and Centura Health have broken ground on the NICU/ED/OR expansion the St. Francis Medical Center campus. Read more about it here.
