In order to meet the standards of Ignacio School District’s new educational program, RTA evaluated several solutions for a PK-5 elementary school. Based on the goals and visions of the Design Advisory Team (DAT), the District chose to renovate their existing 4-6 intermediate school into a PK-5 school.
The community of Ignacio embraces their culture and heritage and appreciates bright and festive colors. Through design advisory and user groups, a universal language of color, form, and exploration emerged. This language informed and helped to direct RTA’s design process of creating the learning spaces in this building.
By including a variety of colorful shapes and materials in the corridors, the interior spaces reflect the energy and enthusiasm of this age group. The corridors are also a place for students to demonstrate learning with marker boards and tack surfaces. A reading loft located in the library provides a retreat and an opportunity to explore. Painted murals enliven the otherwise drab passageways. Illuminated geometric light fixtures activate the ceiling planes and engage students as soon as they enter the building.
